Q. Why are 5 dans included in both divisions A and B?

A.   Traditionally 5 dans have been included in the A division. However with 7 dans now competing, it may be time to reconsider this. For this tournament, we have given the 5 dans the option as to which division they compete in. Division A is a Swiss McMahon 6 round event used to determine the Canadian Champion as well as the representative to the World Amateur Championships in Japan. The B division is a double knockout for players not wishing to play through the 6 rounds for a variety of possible reasons. For one the B division is double knockout and if you lose 2 games you are free to take advantage of other events as well as the many opportunities to learn from the delegations of professionals.

Q. What if I can only come for 3 days?

A.   Check the schedule. You probably can still compete in the events of your choice. The tournament committee will try to accommodate your needs in any case. Let us know your travel schedule.

Q. What does the registration fee include?

A.   The fee includes the opportunity to participate in any event if you are qualified and your schedule permits. There may be some restrictions such as games with pros held at the same time as a playoff game. The lightning and 9x9 events may be held in conjunction with the main event (later rounds)

The fee includes 3 lunches.

The fee includes free transportation by local volunteers to and from the banquet and tournament venue if available.

The only extra charge is for the (optional) banquet on Sunday night.

Q. What happens if I get eliminated in one of the double elimination events B-H?

A.   You are free to enjoy opportunity to play self pair games (using clocks) with other players. The tournament committee will gladly help arrange these games. Teaching games by stronger players may be available. There are other events such as the lightning tournament, 9x9 event. Don't forget the delegations of professionals coming. They are eager to teach you and meet with you. Some will be playing simultaneous games and there will be enlightening game commentaries.

Q. Why aren't all the round start times listed for divisions B-H?

A.   Because these are double elimination there is no need to synchronize rounds. Play continues without the tournament directors intervention. In fact, these events will proceed much faster than the A division. For example, some second round games may start before all the first round games are determined.

Q. If I am not in the A division will there be enough games to satisfy my needs?

A.   Yes. There will be many players interested in playing self paired games with clocks. There will also be opportunities to play friendly games and participate in other events.
